Enquire About This Test

What does this test assess?

This method detects THC and its primary metabolite THC-COOH in dried blood spots, enabling assessment of recent cannabis use or exposure.

Clinical indications include:

  • Detection of recent cannabis use
  • Assessment of passive cannabis exposure
  • Monitoring of cannabis abstinence in clinical settings
  • Research on cannabis pharmacokinetics

Measured analytes

Analyte coverage

THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and THC-COOH (11-nor-9-carboxy-THC, primary inactive metabolite).

Analytical technique

Both analytes are measured by isotope-dilution LC-MS/MS from DBS, providing specific and sensitive detection of cannabis use without cross-reactivity with other cannabinoids or interfering substances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this test detect?

Detects THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and its primary metabolite THC-COOH from a finger-prick blood spot by LC-MS/MS.

How is this different from a urine drug test?

Blood-based THC detection reflects more recent exposure than urine testing. LC-MS/MS provides confirmation-grade specificity, unlike immunoassay screens which can produce false positives.

How is the sample collected?

Finger-prick DBS card, at home or in clinic.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are typically delivered within 3 to 5 working days from the time your sample arrives at our laboratory.

How long does THC remain detectable in blood?

THC is typically detectable in blood for 1–2 days after occasional use. THC-COOH, being a metabolite, can be detectable somewhat longer. Detection windows depend on frequency of use, body composition, and dose.
